Is My Dog a Working Dog?
Working dogs are a group of medium to giant sized dogs originally bred to perform a particular task, such as:
- Herding or droving animals, including sheep and cattle
- Pulling or hauling vehicles, including sleds and carts
- Hunting, where their role generally involves tracking, pointing, retrieving, and chasing down prey
- Guarding homes or properties
- Rescue work, either at sea or in the mountains
The advent of modern technology and machinery have negated a lot of the functions of the working dog, but after generations of selective breeding, working dog breeds are generally strong, with solid builds, high intelligence, and a fierce protective instinct. These traits have made such dogs useful in many modern roles, including jobs as:
- Police dogs
- Guard dogs
- Search and rescue dogs
- Sled dogs
- Gun dogs
Today, many of these dogs have found their ways into homes as household pets. However, due to their size, inherent strength, and their independent and domineering nature, they could be a difficult handful for first-time dog owners. These dogs need to be properly trained and socialized, under an owner or handler with firm control. Being intelligent dogs, however, they will learn quickly as long as a handler displays strong leadership qualities.
Below is a list of breeds classed under the working dogs category:
- Alaskan Malamute
- Anatolian Shepherd Dog
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Bull Mastiff
- Doberman Pinscher
- German Pinscher
- German Shepherd
- Giant Shnauzer
- Great Dane
- Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
- Great Pyrenees
- Portuguese Water Dog
- Saint Bernard
- Siberian Husky
- Standard Shnauzer
